Tween & Teen Swimming Lessons in Hampshire

SwimFish offers swimming lessons for tweens and teenagers aged approximately 11 to 16 at our private pool on the A30 near Basingstoke. Whether your teenager has swum for years and wants to develop their technique and fitness, or whether they are coming to swimming later and want to build confidence and ability without the pressure of a children’s class environment – our tween and teen programme gives older swimmers the focused, respectful coaching they need.

Swimming Lessons Designed for Older Swimmers

Teaching a teenager is nothing like teaching a seven-year-old. Tweens and teens are more self-aware, more sensitive to comparison, and often more motivated by clear explanations and visible personal progress than by the playful approaches that work with younger children. Tanya and Kirstie understand this completely. Our tween and teen sessions are coached – purposeful, technically focused, and delivered in a way that treats older swimmers as the capable young people they are.

Class sizes are small, as with everything at SwimFish. Your teenager will not be lost in a group, and they will not be taught in a way that feels childish. They will be challenged, supported, and genuinely coached.

Who Tween & Teen Lessons Are For

Tweens and Teens Who Want to Improve Their Technique

Many older swimmers have been swimming for years but have developed habits – inefficient breathing, a flat breaststroke kick, a collapsing front crawl pull – that hold them back. A few sessions of focused technique work can make a remarkable difference. If your teenager wants to swim faster, further, or more efficiently, this is the programme for them.

Teenagers Building Confidence and Fitness in the Water

Swimming is one of the most complete forms of exercise available, and for teenagers who enjoy being active, developing real swimming fitness and stamina – the ability to swim lengths with pace and control – is both physically and mentally rewarding. We can help build a fitness-focused swimming programme tailored to their goals.

Older Beginners Who Did Not Learn Earlier

Not every teenager has had consistent swimming lessons. Some have had gaps in their education, some have had previous negative experiences in crowded classes, and some simply never had the opportunity. It is genuinely never too late, and a teenager who has not yet learned to swim is not unusual. Our approach is patient, non- judgmental, and entirely focused on building real ability without embarrassment or comparison.

Swimmers Preparing for Rookie Lifeguard

The RLSS Rookie Lifeguard programme requires a solid 50 metres of continuous front crawl as an entry point. If your teenager is close but not quite there, our tween and teen lessons are the natural preparation route – and we will tell you honestly when they are ready to make the transition. → See Rookie Lifeguard Programme

What Tween & Teen Lessons Cover

Our tween and teen curriculum is built around what each individual swimmer needs – there is no fixed programme that every teenager follows regardless of where they are starting from. In a typical course of lessons, most swimmers will work across:

  • All four strokes – front crawl, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly – with correct technique and breathing rhythm
  • Tumble turns, open turns, and starts from the poolside
  • Stamina and fitness – swimming sets with pace, building distance and efficiency over time
  • Water confidence and independent swimming – being comfortable and in control in the water
  • Water safety awareness appropriate to their age and ability

A Note on Our Approach – No Badge Pressure

We do not use badge or certificate schemes at SwimFish, and this is particularly relevant for older swimmers. Many teenagers have experienced the badge system and know how demoralising it can feel to be assessed and found wanting.

At SwimFish, your teenager is coached towards their own goals. Progress is measured by what they can do this week that they could not do last week, not by a test. This approach consistently produces better results and, more importantly, swimmers who genuinely enjoy what they are doing.

Lesson Times and Scheduling

Tween and teen lessons are arranged to fit around school and other commitments. We typically offer after-school slots and weekend sessions during term time. Please get in touch to discuss current availability and find a time that works for your teenager.

What Our Swimmers and Parents Say

“My 13-year-old son was embarrassed to admit he couldn’t swim properly. He’d been getting by in school lessons without really being taught anything. Three months with Tanya and he’s doing proper front crawl, breaststroke, and has started asking to go to the pool on weekends. Completely transformed his confidence.”

- Facebook Review

“Kirstie has been brilliant with our daughter who had some anxiety around water after a bad experience at her secondary school pool. She never once felt judged or rushed. She swims beautifully now and actually enjoys it – which I honestly did not think was possible a year ago.”

Where We Teach

Tween and teen lessons take place at the BCH pool on the A30 – a private facility between Basingstoke and Hook. For a teenager who might feel self-conscious in a public pool, the setting makes a genuine practical difference. Free parking is available on site.
