Rookie Lifeguard Programme in Hampshire
BRONZE, SILVER & GOLD AWARDSSwimFish is a Hampshire provider of the RLSS UK Rookie Lifeguard programme – a nationally recognised water safety and life-saving skills programme for young people who are already strong swimmers. Running through three levels – Bronze, Silver, and Gold – Rookie Lifeguard takes capable swimmers beyond technique into the real-world skills that can keep people safe in and around water. It is one of the most rewarding and genuinely useful programmes a young swimmer can complete.
What Is the RLSS Rookie Lifeguard Programme?
The Rookie Lifeguard programme was designed by the Royal Life Saving Society UK – the leading authority on water safety and drowning prevention in the United Kingdom. It is not an extension of swimming lessons. It is a structured, progressive programme of water safety education and practical rescue skills, combining in-pool practical work with poolside theory at every level.
There are three levels – Bronze, Silver, and Gold – with three separate awards within each level, making nine awards in total. Participants work through them progressively, with each level building on the skills and confidence developed in the one before. Completing all three levels represents a genuine and significant achievement in water safety competence.
Is My Child Ready for Rookie Lifeguard?
The Rookie Lifeguard programme has a clear and non-negotiable entry requirement: participants must be able to swim 50 metres of strong, continuous front crawl before they begin. This is a programme for confident, capable swimmers – it is physically and mentally demanding, and it is designed to be. It is not a beginner programme.
If your child or teenager is not yet at 50m front crawl, our children’s swimming lessons or tween and teen programme will get them there. We will tell you honestly when they are ready to make the step up.
What Participants Will Learn
The skills covered by the Rookie Lifeguard programme go far beyond what standard swimming lessons provide. These are practical, applicable, potentially life-saving skills – relevant not just in a swimming pool but at the coast, on rivers and lakes, and in any open water environment.
In-Water Practical Skills
Participants learn and practise a full range of active water skills across the three award levels:
- Towing: supporting and moving a casualty through the water to safety
- Floating and survival floating: maintaining position in the water for extended periods
- Surface diving and object retrieval: diving from the pool surface and from the poolside, recovering objects from depth
- Treading water: sustaining an upright position in deep water under fatigue
- Swimming in clothes: maintaining swimming ability when fully clothed, as in a real-world accident scenario
- Removing clothing in the water: managing buoyancy when clothing becomes a hindrance
- Supporting a casualty: keeping another person afloat while awaiting assistance
Poolside Theory and Water Safety Awareness
Alongside the in-water sessions, the Rookie Lifeguard programme includes structured poolside theory that covers:
- Recognising a water emergency and understanding when and how to intervene safely
- How to call for help effectively – using available resources and communication methods
- Risk assessment in different water environments – pools, open water, coastal settings
- Understanding the conditions and factors that lead to drowning incidents
- What to do while waiting for emergency services to arrive
Bronze, Silver, and Gold – The Three Levels
Bronze introduces the foundational concepts and core practical skills of water safety and rescue. Participants develop the physical ability and situational awareness to begin responding to water emergencies in a controlled pool environment.
Silver builds on Bronze with more complex scenarios, greater physical demands, and deeper theory work. Participants are expected to apply their skills with increasing confidence and accuracy.
Gold represents the highest level of the Rookie Lifeguard programme. Participants are expected to demonstrate capable, efficient, and composed water safety and rescue skills across a range of situations – the standard of a young person genuinely prepared to act in a real-world water emergency.
Why Rookie Lifeguard Matters Beyond the Swimming Pool
The UK has one of the highest rates of accidental drowning in Western Europe, and the majority of incidents involve people who consider themselves competent swimmers in environments they underestimate – open water, tidal conditions, fast-flowing rivers. The Rookie Lifeguard programme directly addresses this gap between pool swimming ability and real-world water safety.
A young person who completes the Rookie Lifeguard programme up to Gold level has the knowledge, physical skills, and situational awareness to recognise a water emergency, act appropriately, support a casualty, and summon help effectively. These are not abstract skills – they are the skills that save lives.
How We Run Rookie Lifeguard at SwimFish
We offer the Rookie Lifeguard programme for individual participants working through the award levels at their own pace, and as group sessions for a number of young swimmers completing the programme together. Group bookings are particularly popular – a group of friends, a school year group, or any collection of confident young swimmers who want to undertake something genuinely challenging and meaningful together.
Sessions are led by Tanya or Kirstie, both of whom bring their water safety backgrounds to the programme. Theory components are delivered poolside in clear, accessible terms – this is not a dry lecture, it is an active and engaged part of every session.
Rookie Lifeguard and the Path Ahead
Completing the Rookie Lifeguard programme to Gold level is an excellent foundation for young people who are interested in taking their water safety involvement further, whether through the RLSS National Pool Lifeguard
Qualification (NPLQ) at age 16, through competitive swimming, or simply through a lifelong confident relationship with the water. Many of our Rookie Lifeguard graduates go on to become lifeguards themselves.
