Children's Swimming Lessons in Hampshire

SwimFish offers children’s swimming lessons in Hampshire for school-age children aged approximately 4 to 14 – whether your child is a complete beginner who has never been in a pool without a float, or an intermediate swimmer who is ready to refine their technique and build real stamina. Our classes are small, carefully matched by ability, and led by Tanya and Kirstie at our pool on the A30 near Basingstoke.

Small Classes, Happy Swimmers – Learning at Their Own Pace

We believe the best swimming progress happens when a child feels relaxed, supported, and genuinely seen by their teacher. That’s why we keep class sizes small. Every lesson, your child is known by name. Their technique is watched closely. Their progress is noticed and celebrated – not through badges, but through the confidence that comes from actually being able to do something they could not do before.
We do not use badge-based grading systems. We do not put children through assessment days that can turn a child who loves swimming into one who dreads it. We teach properly – all four strokes, tumble turns, water safety – and we let the swimming itself be the reward.

Who These Lessons Are For

Our children’s swimming lessons are for school-age children from approximately age 4 upwards. There is no minimum ability requirement to join – if your child is a nervous beginner, we will start exactly where they are. If they have had lessons elsewhere and you feel they have plateaued, or if they have developed anxiety around assessment days, our approach may be exactly what they need.
Children are grouped by ability, not age alone, so your child will always be swimming with others at a similar stage. As they progress, they move naturally through the groups.

What Your Child Will Learn

Our children’s lessons follow a structured curriculum designed to produce capable, confident, safe swimmers. We teach technique from the beginning, and build progressively towards skilled, independent swimming.

Strokes We Teach: Front Crawl, Backstroke, Breaststroke, Butterfly

All four competitive strokes are taught progressively as your child develops. We focus on correct technique from the outset – good habits built early make for better, more efficient swimmers as they grow. Tumble turns are also taught as swimmers reach the appropriate stage (we’ve taught children as young as 5 to do this).

Water Safety and Confidence Built In from Day One

Water safety is woven into every lesson, not treated as a separate topic. Children learn to be aware and respectful of water from the very first class, and as they develop, this extends to practical water safety skills that extend beyond the pool.

When Do Lessons Take Place?

Children’s swimming lessons at SwimFish run Monday to Thursday from 3.45pm – perfect for after school – and Saturday mornings. Lessons run during term time. We will always communicate clearly about term dates, holiday periods, and any changes to the schedule.

Class Sizes and How We Group Children

We maintain small classes. Children are grouped by swimming ability rather than age, so every child in the group is working towards similar goals. This means Tanya or Kirstie can give genuinely targeted feedback to every swimmer in every session.
As your child’s swimming develops, they move naturally onto the next stage. There is no assessment day. There is no badge they need to pass.

What Parents Say About Our Children’s Lessons

“My daughter had tried two other swim schools before SwimFish. She was making no progress and starting to dread lessons. Within a term with Tanya, she was swimming a full length of front crawl. The difference is the class size and the individual attention.”

- Facebook Review

“Tanya notices every single improvement and tells the children in a way that makes them glow with pride. My son has gone from refusing to put his face in the water to asking to go to swimming every week. Cannot recommend SwimFish highly enough.”
