Baby Swimming Lessons in Hampshire – From Birth
SwimFish offers baby and toddler swimming lessons in Hampshire from birth. Our parent and child classes take place in our private pool on the A30 near Basingstoke – a calm, welcoming environment where your baby takes their first steps into a lifetime of water confidence. We run sessions on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings, and Saturday from 8am during term time.
The Perfect Introduction to Water for Your Baby or Toddler
The early months and years are the most natural time for a child to develop a relationship with water. Babies have no fear of the pool – they simply respond to warmth, movement, their parent’s voice, and the playfulness of the lesson. Our classes are designed to work with that instinct, creating positive associations with water that stay with your child for life.
You will get into the water with your baby. You are the most important person in that pool for your child, and our lessons are built around the parent-child bond. Tanya guides you through every activity – you will always know exactly what to do, and your baby will always feel safe because they are with you.
What Age Can Babies Start?
We welcome babies from birth, although every family’s situation is different. Before starting lessons, it is worth considering your own recovery and wellbeing after birth, your confidence in the water, and your baby’s size and comfort. Many parents find that holding a very small newborn in the pool can feel quite different from holding a larger, more robust baby.
Traditionally, parents have been advised to wait until after their baby’s first immunisations before attending swimming lessons, both for added reassurance and peace of mind. We continue to recommend this as a sensible guideline, although the decision is ultimately a personal one for each family.
Our baby and toddler classes run up to approximately four years of age, typically until children begin Reception class. From there, children usually progress into our independent children’s swimming lessons.
What Happens in a Baby Swimming Lesson?
A typical baby swimming lesson at SwimFish is warm, playful, and full of movement and song. We use singing, toys, and gentle water games to build your baby’s familiarity and confidence in the water. No two lessons are the same, but all of them are built around the same principle: positive, happy associations with the pool, developed through play.
Building Water Confidence Through Play
From the very first session, we work on the foundations of water confidence – supporting your baby as they experience buoyancy, gentle submersion, movement through the water, and the pleasure of splashing with you. Nothing is rushed. Nothing is forced. We follow your baby’s lead and celebrate every moment of progress, however small.
What to Expect in Your First Lesson
Your first lesson will be gentle and exploratory. Tanya will introduce herself, explain what to expect, and guide you through a series of simple activities that help both you and your baby settle into the pool environment. Many parents
tell us the first lesson feels surprisingly natural – babies respond instinctively to warm water and familiar voices. Come in expecting to enjoy it, and you almost certainly will.
Parent and Child Lessons: Do I Need to Be in the Water?
Yes – parents and carers are in the water with their baby throughout the lesson. Far from being a downside, this is one of the most cherished aspects of baby swimming. The physical closeness in warm water, the eye contact, the shared experience of your baby discovering something new, it is genuinely wonderful. Many parents tell us that baby swimming became one of their favourite weekly rituals.
You do not need to be a strong or confident swimmer yourself. You will be in shallow water, fully in control, and supported by Tanya throughout. If you have any concerns about being in the pool, please let us know before your first lesson.
The Pool: Warm, Safe, and the Right Size
Our lessons take place at the Basingstoke Country Hotel (BCH) pool on the A30 – a facility that is warm, and designed for small-group teaching. The pool temperature is maintained at a comfortable level for babies and toddlers. It’s a calm, focused environment, exactly right for tiny swimmers.
